MyPressi TWSIT is coming to Hong Kong! (via Coffee De Amour)

MyPressi TWIST, via MyPressi.com
I have been keep an eye on those “portable espresso machine” on the market. By far it is still a rarely noticed category of the coffee scene.
The first one got noticed by me was the Handpresso, I was once considered that’s “great”, however the drawbacks of it are being overly priced and the requirement of special coffee “pods”. That’s really just for the ones who just wanna some “coffee”, but not “espresso”.
Good news that finally here I’ve found the MyPressi TWIST, looks kinda weird but it’s really kinda appear like able to produce REAL espresso portably. This thing’s cheaper, able to choose between coffee pods and fresh ground coffee and it has full control of the extraction of espresso.
I guess the only cons of the TWIST is the nature of single use-N2O cartridges. Each time you pull a shot, you use one cartridge, so that’s the underlying cost for it.
The use of cartridge can promise on a steady pressure and it can makes 4 doubles or up to 8 single shots for each cartridges.
But anyway it’s still considered very great for me, and I’m seriously considering the get one!

Hong Kong’s top new coffee spots (via Coffee De Amour)
I’ve found this great blog post that let me know the world of coffee in Hong Kong is much bigger than what me and you have thought. Good to see the coffee market of Hong Kong being kept growing and heated up.
Totally agreed with the line “soulless chain cafe’s” Believe me, this is totally true and you’ll easily feel the difference between these independent gems and the chains’. That’s no matter how the chain try to be “homey”, it’s still kinda “fake”.
I guess I’d visit some of these spots to find the best coffee in Hong Kong.

#DailyFact: Chris is a coffee lover, but why?

I’ve been known as a coffee lover. This love has made me to visiting cafés around the city, tasting coffees, and being my job. So why I’m so serious into coffee, which once so unnoticed for the people of Hong Kong?
It’s all begun during my studies in Australia (yes, it’s Aussie again – I have strong ties with it!). As a hospitality student, I’ve to cover the industry as a whole, it is hotel service, it is tourism, it is food & beverage – everything about service is hospitality – this includes the coffee business.
I got to learn about the business side of the coffee industry in Australia, but also the basis: the skills to make coffee beverages. That’s the time when I first to know the world of coffees, something about beans (arabica? robusta?) and the likes of espresso techniques.
At the time when I first used the espresso machine, I fell in love with it immediately. Of course it’s a bit of fun to use the espresso machine that makes the love. On the other hand, I was able to gain some practical experiences at a real cafés in Australia. That has made me to have some taste on the operation of cafés, though it’s somewhat different from what Starbucks’ like.
The love coffee has so made me choose to work with Starbucks, that’s kinda to fuel up my passion with coffee.
It’s just that simple.
2 years… with the coffee business
Today, December 12, it’s my 2nd anniversary since joining Starbucks, the world renowned coffee chain.
Worked with 3 stores, got promoted, met a lot new friends, seen the new boss step on, and have learnt a lot in terms of business operations.
And I’ve seen how changes rapidly occur in terms of personnel matters.
Maybe I should describe my journey of work in 3 parts.
First part, the blind part, why I say “blind”? It’s the time when I just join the company, at the IFC store, got to know nothing, just work, work, work and enjoy the funny time with partners. It’s not much I needed to care after working the basics. It’s the funniest time for me at Starbucks. It also let me to know those loyal customers who would regonize me when I once relocated to other stores.
The second part, it’s the hard part. That’s the time when I relocated to Wan Chai store and it’s the stage when I faced the challenges leading to my promotion. I got to learn the the strictest standards of the company. As the new management steps up, there’s extreme high tension to maintain that standards and serve the most important peoples of the company. That was really a hard time for me, but has let me know the importance of standards and quality of service, and thankfully I’ve taken care by nice managers and district managers.
And so the hard part has led me to my promotion as a supervisor and to the third part – the “do-my-best-for-the-unknown-future” part.
My promotion has then led me to another relocation to the Sheung Wan store as currently where I’m at. I am able to be devoted to the managerial role for the store, taking care more paper works and ensure the continuous profit growth. I did really helped to share the workload of my manager and again has a lot of fun time with my fellow partners.
Through there’s a challenge of friendship due to a love crash at some point, it’s still very enjoyable, most of my fellow partners supports me and I do really proud of my job at this stage – especially when customers I met beforehand at other stores do regonize me again when they see me.
So far at this store, maybe coz’ of this isn’t the prime location, there’s far less pressure to push sales and to meet big bosses, however I will always put my role in my mind – the duty to ensure every customers’ happy, every partners’ happy and work together to create the best environment for all, and thus effectively increases sales.
Looking ahead for the another year, there’s still lots of uncertainties: How long will I still stay at this Sheung Wan store? Will get promoted? Will I get complaint or even fired? or Will I actually decide to leave the company for another job?
Anyway I will always do my best, remembering one slogan from Cathay Pacific that I liked best: “Services Straight from the Heart (發自內心的服務)” and deliver great service “one cup at a time”!
My Coffee Guide by Moses Chan
Last week when I wandered around the shops, I saw this new book by Moses Chan(陳豪), My Coffee Guide (In Chinese: 給咖啡偷一杯時間).

This book is an extension to his TV program about coffee, which broadcasted earlier this year. As the name implies, this book is a guide for coffee lovers like me to find hidden coffee spots around Hong Kong, from Small home-style shops to international fame outlets in Hong Kong. Between the pages Moses has written about his comments about different aspects of a coffee – in relation to something personal.

Besides Hong Kong coffee spots, this book also guides us to the coffee spots Moses visited during filming of the TV program, so this lets everyone be able to follow his steps to Italy, Taiwan, Denmark, Indonesia and Kenya, to find the best cup of coffee… other than StXXXbXXs.
There’s some coffee shops I really wanted to visit or already visited in HK, as with the book. Did anyone visited Fuel Espresso at IFC? I really liked it’s style of service, that’s really not a “normal” coffee shop you’d think of, I think it should be called as a “Coffee Boutique”. There’s the place you won’t find any armchairs or tables, for one to seat for a long time, as found in SBUX, Pacific Coffee or Caffe Habitu. You can only find high chairs and the espresso bar in Fuel Espresso, along with jazz music. This is a coffee boutique operated like bars where you to order alcoholic drinks. I think this set-up can make customers really focused on to the coffee they’re drinking plus the conversations – not just between you and your friends, but also with their Barista!
This book is now available at major bookstores in Hong Kong for HK$ 78.00. (Buy online)
P.S.: Do you see that CD at the first pic? It’s new X’mas compilation CD “Making Merry” now selling at Starbucks Hong Kong. X’mas has started in Starbucks now and my favourite drink is back: Toffee Nut Latte. Come down to my store (map), and mention KnowMoreChris and I will treat you one for FREE! (in any size you like!)
Day-off today.
Oh, yes I’ve finally got my own Studio Beats by dr. dre headphones, after breaking apart so much headphones before. I’m sure I’ll take this one very seriously and won’t hurt it (coz’ it’s very pricey, actually).
So today it’s my day-off and decided to giv my new Studio Beats by dr. dre a go. I’ve posted the unboxing pics at Facebook, just click the above pic to check them out.
